Cochrane is the longest drive of our service areas — roughly 40 minutes in on Highway 1 — and the vehicles that make that trip usually need the most work. Cochrane drivers do two things hard on paint: they drive the mountain corridor, and many of them live on or near gravel.

The Highway 1 run west toward Canmore and Banff is one of the worst stretches in the province for stone damage, and it is also where bug strike is heaviest through summer. Bug residue is acidic. Left on hot paint for a few days it etches, and no amount of washing brings the gloss back — it needs polishing.

What Cochrane driving does to a vehicle

• Mountain-highway stone damage. The Highway 1 corridor west is relentless on front ends. Film on the hood, fenders and bumper is the only thing that genuinely stops a chip.
• Acidic bug strike. Summer bug residue etches clear coat within days in the sun. It is the single most common paint problem we see on Cochrane vehicles.
• Gravel road dust. Acreage and rural driving forces fine dust into door seals, vents and carpet backing, where it grinds into fabric every time someone sits down.
• Chinook freeze-thaw. Cochrane swings through zero more often than Calgary does. Repeated freezing and thawing of salty meltwater is hard on trim, seals and lower panels.
