If you have been quoted for ceramic coating, you have probably seen a second line item for paint correction — sometimes costing more than the coating itself. It is the part of the quote people most often try to remove, and usually the part that matters most.
Here is what correction actually is, when you genuinely need it, and when you can skip it.
What paint correction actually means
Your paint has a clear coat over the colour. Over time that clear coat collects defects: swirl marks from washing, light scratches, water spot etching, oxidation, bug etching. They scatter light, which is why an older car looks flat even when clean.
Correction removes a microscopic layer of clear coat with a machine polisher and abrasive compound, levelling the surface so light reflects cleanly again. It is not a coating, a filler or a wax. It is controlled removal of damaged material.
Why it matters before coating
This is the part worth understanding: a ceramic coating locks in whatever condition the paint is in.
The coating cures into a hard, semi-permanent layer bonded to the clear coat. If that clear coat is full of swirl marks when you coat it, you have sealed the swirl marks in for the next three to seven years. Removing them later means removing the coating first.
That is why prep, not product, is where most of the labour and cost sits on a proper coating job — and why a suspiciously cheap coating quote almost always means correction was skipped.
Do you actually need it?
Usually not — brand new vehicles
Paint on a new car is generally in good condition. A light single-stage polish or even just decontamination is often enough. This is why coating a new vehicle is the best value: you are protecting rather than repairing, and the total cost is much lower.
Usually yes — anything a few years old
If the car has been through automatic washes, or lived outside through Alberta winters, expect swirls and some etching. Look at the paint under direct sun or a bright light: fine circular scratches across the surface mean correction.
Multi-stage — neglected or heavily marred paint
Deeper defects need a compounding stage followed by a refining polish. More time, more cost, and there is a limit — clear coat is finite, and a responsible shop will tell you when a defect is too deep to safely remove rather than polishing through it.

What correction cannot do
- It cannot fix scratches through the clear coat. If you can catch a fingernail in it, polishing will not remove it.
- It is not unlimited. Clear coat can only be polished so many times over a car’s life.
- It does not prevent future swirls. That is washing technique — and part of why a coating helps, since a slicker surface marrs less easily.
