If your paint looks dull and hazy in direct sun, covered in fine circular scratches, there is a good chance an automatic car wash put them there. Here is what actually happens inside one, and why it matters more in Calgary than most places.
Brush washes drag grit from the previous vehicle across your paint. In a Calgary winter that grit includes salt crystals and road sand. Touchless is safer; hand washing is safest.
What actually causes swirl marks
Swirl marks are thousands of fine scratches in the clear coat. Under diffuse light you will not see them. In direct sun or under a bright light they scatter light in circles, which is why a clean car can still look dull.
They are caused by abrasion — anything dragged across paint that is harder than clear coat. In an automatic wash, that means the brushes and whatever the last twenty vehicles left on them.
Why Calgary makes it worse
- Road sand. Alberta uses a lot of it, and it is sharp. It ends up in wash brushes.
- Salt crystals. Dried brine leaves abrasive crystals on every vehicle entering the wash.
- Winter frequency. You wash more often in winter, so exposure multiplies exactly when the contamination is worst.
The three wash types, ranked
| Type | Paint safety | Cleaning power |
|---|---|---|
| Brush / friction | Poor — direct abrasion | Good |
| Touchless | Reasonable — no contact | Moderate; relies on stronger chemicals |
| Hand wash, two-bucket | Best | Best |
Can swirl marks be removed?
Yes — that is what paint correction does. A machine polisher removes a microscopic layer of clear coat to level the surface. Our Signature detail from $350 includes a light machine polish; heavier marring needs multi-stage correction from $600.
The limit is clear coat thickness. It is finite, so correction is not something to do endlessly. Preventing swirls is cheaper than removing them.
How to wash without damaging paint
- Use the two-bucket method — one for soap, one to rinse the mitt.
- Rinse thoroughly before touching the paint, so loose grit leaves first.
- Use a microfibre mitt, not a sponge or brush.
- Dry with a clean microfibre towel or a blower, not a chamois dragged across the panel.
- If you must use an automatic wash, choose touchless.
Frequently asked questions
Are touchless car washes safe for paint?
Safer than brush washes because nothing touches the paint. They compensate with stronger chemicals, which can strip wax and sealant faster, but they will not cause swirl marks.
Can swirl marks be polished out?
Usually yes. Light swirls come out with a single-stage polish; heavier marring needs multi-stage correction. Anything deep enough to catch a fingernail is through the clear coat and cannot be safely polished.
Does ceramic coating prevent swirls?
It reduces them. A coated surface is harder and slicker so it marrs less easily, but it is not scratch-proof. Wash technique still matters.
How much does it cost to fix swirl marks in Calgary?
Our Signature detail with a light machine polish starts at $350. Multi-stage correction for heavily marred paint starts at $600.
