A ceramic coating is not maintenance-free. It is maintenance-easier. The coatings that fail early almost never fail because of the product — they fail because of how the car was washed afterwards.
Wash every two weeks with a pH-neutral soap and the two-bucket method. Avoid brush washes and harsh degreasers. Never let a coated car dry in direct sun with water on it.
What a coating actually does
The coating cures into a hard, hydrophobic layer bonded to your clear coat. Water beads and sheets off, taking contamination with it. That is why a coated car cleans up in a fraction of the time.
What it does not do is repel everything permanently. Road film, brake dust and hard water still land on it. If they are left there, they sit on the coating and eventually dull its performance.
The maintenance routine
- Wash every two weeks — more in winter. Frequency matters more than intensity.
- pH-neutral soap only. Strong degreasers and alkaline traffic-film removers shorten coating life.
- Two buckets. Even on a coated car, dragging grit causes marring.
- Dry it. Letting a coated car air-dry in the sun is the fastest way to get water spots, because Calgary water is hard.
- Avoid brush washes entirely. They abrade the coating just as they abrade paint.
Hard water is the real enemy here
Calgary water is mineral-heavy. When it dries on a coated surface it leaves deposits, and because the coating is hard those deposits sit on top rather than soaking in. Left long enough in sun, they can etch into the coating itself.
This is the single most common way a good coating starts looking mediocre after a year. Drying the car properly prevents it entirely.
When to have it professionally maintained
A coated car benefits from an annual decontamination — a proper wash, iron removal and inspection. It removes bonded contamination that normal washing leaves behind, and it is the point at which we can tell you honestly how the coating is holding up.
Frequently asked questions
How do I wash a ceramic coated car?
pH-neutral soap, two-bucket method, microfibre mitt, and dry it properly. Avoid brush washes and strong degreasers.
Can I take a coated car through an automatic wash?
Touchless is acceptable occasionally. Brush washes will abrade the coating and cause marring, exactly as they do on uncoated paint.
Do I still need to wax a coated car?
No. Wax on top of a coating masks the hydrophobic properties you paid for and wears off within weeks.
Why has my coating stopped beading water?
Usually bonded contamination or hard water deposits sitting on the surface rather than coating failure. A proper decontamination often restores it.
