If you wash your car at home and it dries with cloudy white rings that will not wipe off, that is not dirt. It is mineral deposit from Calgary\u2019s hard water, and left long enough it stops being a cleaning problem and becomes a paint problem.

Do not let water dry on your paint, especially in sun. Fresh deposits wipe off. Etched ones need machine polishing from $350.
What a water spot actually is
Tap water carries dissolved minerals — largely calcium and magnesium. When a droplet evaporates, the water leaves and the minerals stay, drying as a ring on the surface.
That is stage one, and it is harmless. It wipes off with a detailer spray or comes off in the next wash.
When it becomes damage
Stage two is etching. Sitting in direct sun, the droplet acts as a lens and the concentrated minerals become mildly corrosive. They eat a shallow crater into the clear coat.
At that point wiping does nothing, because the defect is no longer on the paint — it is in it. The only fix is removing a microscopic layer of clear coat with a machine polisher.
Why Calgary is worse than most
- Hard water supply. Higher mineral content means more residue per droplet.
- Intense sun at altitude. Calgary gets strong UV, which accelerates the etching process.
- Dry air. Water evaporates fast, so droplets concentrate quickly rather than running off.
- Lake and river use. Boat and trailer owners around Chestermere deal with this constantly.
How to prevent it
- Wash in shade, or early morning and evening — never in direct midday sun.
- Dry the car immediately with microfibre or a blower. Do not let it air-dry.
- Rinse thoroughly if sprinklers or a hose have hit the car.
- A ceramic coating helps considerably: water sheets off rather than sitting in droplets, so there is far less to dry.
Fixing existing spots
Fresh deposits come off with decontamination. Etched spots need machine polishing, which is included in our Signature detail from $350. Deep etching may need multi-stage correction from $600.
We assess under proper lighting before quoting, because the difference between a deposit and an etch is not always visible in a driveway.
Frequently asked questions
Can hard water spots be removed?
Fresh mineral deposits wipe off with decontamination. If the spot has etched into the clear coat it needs machine polishing — from $350 with our Signature detail.
Does ceramic coating prevent water spots?
It reduces them substantially because water sheets off rather than sitting in droplets. You should still dry the car rather than letting it air-dry.
Why do spots appear even after washing?
Because they are in the clear coat, not on it. Washing cannot remove an etch; only polishing can.
Is it worse in summer?
Yes. Direct sun concentrates the minerals and accelerates etching, which is why washing in shade matters.
