Window tinting in Calgary is extremely popular — and for good reason. Our summers are intense, UV exposure fades interiors fast, and the privacy is genuinely useful. But a lot of drivers get tint installed without knowing Alberta’s laws, and then get surprised at an inspection.
Alberta Window Tinting Laws (2026)
Windshield: No tint permitted below the AS1 line (typically the top 75mm). This is non-negotiable.
Front side windows (driver and passenger): Must allow at least 70% light transmission. This means very light tint only — most factory glass already sits around 70-75%.
Rear side windows and rear window: No legal restriction in Alberta. You can go as dark as you want — 5%, 20%, 35%, 50% — it’s all legal on rear windows.
Reflective tint: Highly reflective or mirrored tint is not permitted on any windows.
Why Tint Is Worth It in Calgary
Heat rejection: Calgary summers get intense. Quality 3M window film blocks up to 60% of solar heat, making your interior dramatically cooler and reducing AC usage.
UV protection: UV rays fade your dashboard, leather seats, and upholstery year-round — even in winter. 3M film blocks up to 99% of UV.
Glare reduction: Particularly useful during Calgary’s low-angle winter sun which causes serious glare on Deerfoot and major routes.
